McDonald’s now accepts BTC & USDT

McDonald’s is a global fast food and was among the first to participate in the Lugano crypto-friendly efforts. On October 3, 2022, McDonald’s reportedly started to accept Bitcoin (BTC) as a payment method in Lugano, an Italian-speaking region of Switzerland, which is becoming a good catch in Western Europe for crypto adoption.

The one-minute video uploaded by Bitcoin Magazine on Twitter had a payment on McDonald’s digital kiosk done at the regular register via a mobile app; on the credit cash machine, the Tether (USDT) was seen next to the Bitcoin symbol.

In March 2022, Lugano announced the acceptance of LVGA tokens, Bitcoin, and Tether, as legal tender. Moreso, the city signed a memorandum of understanding with Tether Operations Limited on March 3, 2022.

According to the plan, Tether created two investment funds; for crypto startups and crypto shops and businesses across the city. The pool is valued at $106 million (100 million Swiss francs equivalent) and $3 million (3 million Swiss francs).

In addition, Lugano residents can pay taxes, parking tickets, public services, and tuition fees for students using crypto. Also, over 200 shops and businesses are expected to receive crypto for goods and services.

Paolo Ardoino, chief technology officer of Tether and Bitfinex, announced a two-week educational blockchain and cryptocurrencies activity in Lugano. In addition, following El Salvador’s Bitcoin adoption in September 2021, about McDonald’s 19 outlets in the country started accepting Bitcoin.
