Ghana is not relenting in bringing blockchain based solutions to the problems facing the West African country. Recently, the country made a new blockchain partnership with IBM. The technology giant is  joining forces with the government of Ghana to develop blockchain solutions to be used on land administration. The country had been faced with the problem of land registration for so long and this seems like a great development. IBM and the government of Ghana signed an agreement to formalise the partnership at the first US-Ghana Business Forum, which was held on July 5, 2018.
The Blockchain technology will be used to enable a modernised, well structured, immutable land record keeping in Ghana which would allow for a more verifiable land record. Currently, Ghana like most countries in the world rely on paper records which is considered to be inadequate because of its failure in been verifiable.
The general manager for IBM Middle East and Africa, Takreem El-Tohamy, explained, “We are doing this with a group of Ghanaian business partners, ensuring the transfer of know-how and technology.” He explained that the government is partnering to create a chance for more security and transparency in the industry at the same time increase the access to investment and capital in the country. He also explained, “For the ports, investments based on blockchain can help advance the President’s Advisory Council on Doing Business in Africa (PAC-DBIA) objectives to improve US-Africa commercial relationship as modern customs and port logistics systems are critical for improving trade facilitation.” IBM will be working directly with Ghana’s Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to develop plans to take this initiative forward.
