Meta unveils AI-powered assistant and VR headset for Facebook streaming

Published

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has introduced Meta AI, a new AI-powered assistant designed to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

According to Mark, Meta AI will be integrated with its top platforms – Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp – and eventually, mixed reality devices.

The CEO said that this assistant is powered by Meta’s large language model, Llama 2, and has been developed in partnership with Microsoft Bing to provide real-time information to users from the internet.

Llama 2 is Meta’s open-source large language model (LLM). It is a family of LLMs like GPT-3 and PaLM 2, and it was developed to enable developers and organizations to build generative AI-powered tools and experiences.

Llama 2 outperforms several open-source language models on many external benchmarks, including reasoning, coding, proficiency, and knowledge tests.

It is based on the Google transformer architecture, with improvements such as RMSNorm pre-normalization, SwiGLU activation function, multi-query attention, and rotary positional embeddings

The language is freely available for almost anyone to use for research and commercial purposes, which is a big deal and could blow the whole AI space wide open

AI race

The race for AI dominance has commenced, with major tech giants entering the fray. They are achieving this by either developing their AI solutions in-house, acquiring AI startups, or making substantial investments in such startups. It is anticipated that the AI industry will reach a market value of $1 trillion by 2030.

Meta AI distinguishes itself from other players by its focus on creating diverse use cases and its integration with social media platforms.

Mark also announced that Meta AI would become available to select users upon launch, with accessibility extended to US users and owners of the Quest 3 VR headset starting on October 17.

In recent months, Amazon has invested in Anthropic, an AI startup, while OpenAI has enhanced ChatGPT to offer audio and imagery services and also plans to achieve a $90 billion valuation soon. There are also rumors of Apple developing its own AI tool to rival ChatGPT.
