Without a doubt, the year 2020 was a historical year for the crypto market. Starting the year with a total market cap at $191 billion the future did not look bright. However, as the year moved on, the pandemic struck, and the economic instability and stimulus spending pushed the crypto market high with bitcoin leading the way. The crypto market successfully recorded an over 400% increase ending the year 2020 with a total market cap of $758 billion. Here’s a list of the top 10 cryptocurrencies in 2020 by market cap from the lowest to the highest according to CoinMarketCap values. 

10. Chainlink (LINK)

At the beginning of 2020, the price of a LINK token was recorded at $1.77 with a market cap of $632,324,086. The DeFi token successfully ended the year at $11.27 recording an increase of over 500%. The market cap at the end of the year was $4,491,417,083. 

9. Binance Coin (BNB)

Binance Coin started the year 2020 with one BNB going for $13.73 with a market cap of $2,129,155,037. By the end of 2020, the price of the token had increased to $37.38 with an increase of over 170% and the market cap was $5,397,344,408.

8. Cardano (ADA)

Cardano started the year at $0.03 with a market cap of $867,464,516 and ended it at $0.18 with a market cap of $5,643,713,241. This was a huge increase of 449.70%. 

7. Bitcoin Cash (BCH)

BCH started the year 2020 with a market cap of $3,719,917,644 with one BCH going for $204.67. By the end of the year, it had recorded an increase of 65.31% with one BCH going for $343.05 and a market cap of $6,381,074,871.

6. Litecoin (LTC) 

LTC started 2020 with a market cap of $2,679,229,284 and one LTC going for $41.33. By the end of the year, LTC was up by 198.13% with one LTC going for $124.69 and a market cap of $8,256,035,501. 

5. Polkadot (DOT)

From its birth in August 2020, DOT started at a price of $2.90 with a market cap of $0. However, by the end of 2020, it was up by over 190% with one DOT going for $9.29 and its market cap reaching $8,318,279,231. 

4. Ripple (XRP)

XRP opened the year 2020 at a price of $0.19 and a market cap of $8,349,802,256. By the end of the year, the coin had topped by 11.34% reaching $0.22 per coin with a market cap of $9,981,874,643.

3. Tether (USDT)

Pegged to the US dollar, the coin started the year at $0.996 and a market cap of $4,107,371,140. By the end of the year, it closed with a price of $1.00 and a market cap of $20,939,440,705. 

2.  Ethereum (ETH)

The second leading cryptocurrency opened the year at $129.63 and a market cap of $14,271,059,633. It closed the year with a value of $737.80 and a market cap of $84,156,810,765. This increase in price was over 400%. 

  1. Bitcoin (BTC) 

The crypto granddaddy started the year at $7,194.89 and at market cap of $130,580,829,150. By the end of the year, it had increased by over 300% to $29,001.72 and with a market cap of $539,051,138,108. 

With the success of 2020, the year 2021 has already begun on a good note with bitcoin reaching a new all-time high of $41,000 and other altcoins trailing behind. The total crypto market cap is currently at $1 trillion at the time of writing. It surely seems like 2021 would be a good year for the crypto market.
