TON Foundation advances decentralization with Society DAO launch

The TON Foundation advances its mission for greater decentralization by launching the innovative Society DAO, empowering community governance.

The Open Network (TON) has introduced a new governance model, Society DAO, designed to enhance decentralization by empowering the TON community to take a leading role in shaping the network’s future.

The new model is an important step in TON’s promise to enable the community to guide its future.

The goal of Society DAO is to give trusted community members more power to set goals, share resources, and shape the network’s growth. It will encourage openness, independence, and fair competition—all important for building a strong system that can grow and adjust in a decentralized way.

According to the TON Foundation, launching Society DAO is essential to addressing a critical need in TON’s governance structure. Since its inception, TON has relied heavily on its community, employing a fair distribution model that lets participants earn stakes through Proof-of-Stake.

However, as TON expanded, the TON Foundation took on a central role in guiding strategy, funding, and partnerships. While effective in TON’s early stages, this centralization risked stifling innovation and slowing the transition to a fully decentralized network.

This led to the creation of Society DAO to give the community more decision-making power, ensuring that the network’s future is shaped by a wider variety of voices.

With Society DAO, community teams will earn resources based on their results, with multiple projects funded within each category. This approach will keep teams focused on delivering high-quality, innovative solutions while reducing dependency on any single contributor, which ultimately strengthens the network.

Society DAO will start by managing a few key teams within the TON community: TON Core, which focuses on developing the blockchain; TON Studio, which improves the experience for developers; TON Society, which handles community outreach; and Wallet in Telegram, which promotes payments. Each team will work on its own but still follow TON’s main goals, with the Foundation checking in to ensure progress.

With Society DAO, there are now more chances for community involvement. Teams that have shown value can suggest new roles within the TON community, in areas like marketing, DeFi, app development, and community growth. Society DAO will assess these ideas and allocate resources based on performance, supporting high-quality work.

Looking to 2025, Society DAO plans to strengthen community involvement even further by launching a public platform for debate and voting. This platform will allow active members to join in key decisions, using on-chain badges to show their reputation and contributions. This will add more transparency and allow more community members to have a real voice in TON’s decisions.

Society DAO has set clear goals for TON’s growth: to position TON as a leader in real-world cryptocurrency uses, to grow its developer and user community, and to ensure the blockchain is stable and scalable. By January 2025, Society DAO will release its specific objectives for the first half of the year, inviting community feedback on how to reach these goals.
