Fantom Foundation celebrates Opera’s mainnet 4th anniversary

Published

In the excitement surrounding the upcoming Sonic launch, the Fantom Foundation has announced the 4th anniversary of Opera, their long-running EVM chain. With over 99% uptime, Fantom has been empowering builders and fostering innovation since day one.

Fantom Opera is a permissionless blockchain developed by the Fantom Foundation, designed to be compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) and Cosmos SDK. It features a leaderless Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism, which enhances network security by removing the need for leaders to validate transactions.

The blockchain’s fast finality is achieved through the Lachesis aBFT consensus mechanism, allowing transactions to be considered finalized and settled in 1 second. Fantom’s unique data structure implementation enables nodes to securely and accurately verify transactions, resulting in faster throughput and reduced demand on resources for nodes.

The Opera blockchain uses the Lachesis consensus algorithm for security. It’s a self-contained system that rewards validators and ensures network security. You can find comprehensive guidance on setting up and managing a Fantom Opera instance, such as launching a network, configuring settings, testing, and operating a private network for testing, in the platform’s GitHub repository.

Sonic’s mainnet is set to launch this spring, promising even more longevity and innovation for the Fantom ecosystem. The celebration unfolded on January 19, 2024, with community members expressing enthusiasm for the journey ahead.

In 2023, Fantom blockchain achieved several milestones, including the introduction of Fantom Sonic. It is a new virtual machine with an improved database and optimized consensus, offering a next-generation experience for decentralized applications.

The Fantom ecosystem has grown over the years, with thousands of active daily users and over 200 dApps already deployed on the platform. Additionally, Fantom Opera, the mainnet, became Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatible, allowing users to deploy and run Ethereum dApps on Fantom.
