Worldcoin has announced the release of World ID 2.0, an upgraded version that includes integrations with major platforms such as Shopify, Mercado Libre, Reddit, and Telegram.
These integrations enable users on these platforms to verify their humanity without compromising personal information, thereby enhancing security and convenience.
Furthermore, the latest version of the app introduces two authentication levels, namely “lite” and “max,” offering app developers flexibility in customizing security measures based on specific application requirements. This feature aims to minimize losses resulting from fraudulent activities.
Worldcoin is a digital identification platform to provide every individual on Earth with a verified digital identity. It also offers a cryptocurrency token called Worldcoin (WLD) and a crypto wallet app.
The platform verifies user identities by scanning their iris, and generating secure personal identification codes, which are then stored on a decentralized blockchain.
The company asserts that these codes are impervious to duplication or spoofing for fraudulent activities or false identities. Sam Altman, Max Novendstern, and Alex Blania founded the project, which is backed by VC Andreessen Horowitz.
Although the project has been largely successful, critics have raised concerns specifically about the highest level of security, which involves iris scanning.
This technology has sparked worries regarding privacy issues and the protection of biometric data.
In response to these concerns, several countries, including Kenya, the UK, Germany, and France, have initiated investigations into Worldcoin.
These investigations aim to evaluate compliance, privacy implications, and potential risks associated with Worldcoin’s use of iris scanning technology.
Meanwhile, in September 2023, over 200,000 Chileans registered for Worldcoin, while Mexico and Singapore witnessed an expansion of its services.
With more than five million individuals globally possessing a World ID, the platform continues to gain momentum and expand. World ID verifications increased from under a million in January to over 2.5 million by November 2023.
