Amazon and Immutable establish Web3 gaming framework for developers

Published

Immutable, the blockchain gaming company, stated that the acquisition would provide them with access to a wealth of game studio leads and support for closing successful deals. Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Immutable are collaborating to offer additional options for game developers as AWS expands its accelerator programs to support more startups.

In a blog post on October 10, Immutable announced that AWS included it in its ISV Accelerate Program, which supports companies that provide software solutions running on or integrating with AWS. As part of the partnership, Immutable developers can join AWS Activate, which offers benefits such as technical support, training, and $100,000 in AWS cloud credits.

John Kearney, head of Startups Australia at AWS, told Cointelegraph that Immutable has become a global success story, and reaffirmed AWS’s commitment to supporting Web3 game development on its infrastructure.

Immutable utilized Amazon EventBridge and AWS Lambda, two serverless technologies that use events to connect different components of the platform. This enables them to scale up and support a ten-fold increase in partnered games.

However, concerns have arisen about the potential centralization of the gaming and Ethereum ecosystems and the potential risks of relying on a single service provider, such as Amazon, to power the infrastructure of an entire industry. Michael Powell, the product marketing lead at Immutable, addressed these worries in a report to Fortune on October 11:

“A lot of blockchain purists are very big into the idea of decentralization and that everything has to be on-chain and that’s a massive deviation from where game developers build.”

In August, Immutable and Polygon Labs started testing a zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine (zkEVM) on a public testnet. The zkEVM will enable game developers to build on Ethereum while benefiting from lower costs and improved security, in addition to the network effects of building on Ethereum.

In March 2022, a $200 million funding round led by Temasek, a Singaporean state-owned investment firm, valued Immutable at $2.5 billion.
