The PlayToEarn crypto game Axie Infinity will now be available for download on Apple’s App Store. The company announced that the blockchain video game will be accessible to iOS users following its availability on the App Store. Axie Infinity Origins is the latest version of the game and was launched last year and has passed reviews with Apple.
The team said they optimized gameplay via their December launch of limited Origins on the Malaysian Google Playstore, before seeking to expand to other markets.
To play the early iOS version of Origins, gamers can choose to either use their NFT axis or upgrade the starter Axies. It is fully deployed to work in both Adventure and Arena Modes. However, some restrictions apply due to current App Store policies.
Axie Infinity is a playToEarn blockchain game that allows gamers to battle, collect NFTs, and earn rewards. Gamers go into combat against one another and trade the earned NFT rewards in secondary marketplaces for other forms of value.
The crypto game gained popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it experienced a massive decline last year due to being impacted by the market downturn. The average cost of an Axie, total NFT sales, and daily active users plummeted as a result. Enabling iOS download by the Axie Infinity creator Sky Mavis after being on it for over a year could be a step towards gaining back lost users.
The Origins’ initial launch will be available on the App Store in a selected number of countries covering Latin America and Southeast Asia. This approach aims to determine the retention rate of the app before a potential global release, said Sky Mavis co-founder Jeffrey Zirlin. Countries eligible for the initial download include Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, Venezuela, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam, according to the company.
The Axie Infinity team expressed that this development is a rare agreement by Apple to make an externally purchased NFT usable on the App Store. Following this, Axie Infinity launched a contest to celebrate the new feat; users are required to write a review for Origins on the App Store to earn rewards. The contest is spearheaded by QU3ST.
