Interpol looking to police metaverse platforms

The International Criminal Police Organization, Interpol, launched a metaverse and is now working on how to police the metaverse. Looking at crimes happening in the digital world, Interpol Secretary General, Jurgen Stock believes that Interpol must be ready to act on virtual world crimes.

Metaverse is a digital world and an augmented reality. According to Interpol Secretary General, Jurgen Stock, the metaverse and its related technology is fast pacing and if Interpol is not ready for the task of policing the metaverse, they could be left behind.

Despite police organizations being faced with difficulties in adopting and enforcing certain policies in the metaverse, Jurgen Stock stands that the organization must be prepared to combat digital crimes.

The secretary general of the International Criminal Police Organization, Interpol, in an interview with the media house BBC stated that “criminals are sophisticated and professional in quickly adapting to any new technological tool that is available to commit a crime. We need to sufficiently respond to that. Sometimes lawmakers, police, and our societies are running a little bit behind.” This is suggestive that crimes are already being committed by some groups in the digital space, metaverse, and Interpol is working to respond by bringing its action to metaverse platforms.

Metaverse crimes include but are not limited to verbal harassment, money laundering and fraud, assaults, ransomware, and counterfeiting. However, the organization is concerned with determining if a certain action in the metaverse could be considered a crime or not.

Dr. Madan Oberoi, Interpol’s executive director of technology and innovation, following the concerns said, “if you look at the definitions of these crimes in physical space, and you try to apply it in the metaverse, there is a difficulty. We don’t know whether we can call them a crime or not, but those threats are definitely there, so those issues are yet to be resolved.” Moreso, according to Dr. Oberoi Interpol needs to be present in metaverse platforms to police the metaverse.

The International Criminal Police Organization, Interpol in October 2022 launched a metaverse at its 90th General Assembly in New Delhi. The metaverse was designed for law enforcement across the globe. Registered users on the Interpol metaverse can access Interpol offices without any location restrictions. Also, Interpol is open to offering training courses like forensic investigation in the metaverse, as well as practicing acquired abilities by force members.
