The Sandbox partners Shemaroo Entertainment to bring Bollywood icons to the metaverse



Shemaroo Entertainment, a leading name in India’s media and entertainment industry, is set to venture into the metaverse through a strategic partnership with The Sandbox. The collaboration will give rise to BharatBox, a cultural hub within The Sandbox dedicated to showcasing iconic Bollywood figures and brands.

This marks Shemaroo’s progressive leap into the digital realm, blending the richness of cinematic heritage with cutting-edge technology to introduce the Bollywood metaverse in BharatBox.

The Sandbox is a Web3 gaming project that offers a virtual gaming world where users can build, own, and monetize their gaming experiences. 

It is a blockchain-based 3D virtual world game built on the Ethereum network, allowing players to explore, purchase land in the form of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and build structures and experiences to earn income. Users own all in-game NFTs, which are verifiable on the blockchain, providing more opportunities for earning.

Shemaroo Entertainment Ltd. is an Indian content creator, aggregator, and distributor in the media and entertainment industry. The company was founded in 1962 as a book-circulating library by the Maroo brothers (Buddhichand, Atul, and Raman) in collaboration with Gangajibhai Shethias.

Having made its mark in the entertainment industry for over six decades, with renowned classics such as Jab We Met, The Great Gambler, Disco Dancer, Khuda Gawah, Blue, and 22 Yards, Shemaroo Entertainment is extending its influence into the metaverse with a focus on Digital Collectibles and Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). The partnership will offer fans a virtual playground where they can engage with their favorite characters.

The virtual space will feature Bollywood space for hosting film launches, award ceremonies, live concerts, screenings, and other engaging activities. Gamers can groove to iconic steps, earning rewards and purchasing digital collectibles. Additionally, users will be exposed to a casino-themed gaming experience, underwater treasure hunt, cricket games, horse riding, and more.

Arghya Chakravarty, COO at Shemaroo Entertainment Ltd., noted that the company is committed to embracing innovation and the future of entertainment through this alliance.

Sebastien Borget, Co-founder and COO of The Sandbox, sees the partnership as a significant move for Shemaroo in expanding its metaverse experiences, bringing Bollywood and its millions of users into the metaverse for exciting new content. 

The CEO of BharatBox, Karan Keswani, believes in the collaboration with Shemaroo as a celebration of India’s rich cinematic history in a space that redefines the future.
