The President of Nigeria, General Mohamadu Buhari has declared October, 24th the day to celebrate Nigeria’s digital growth and appreciate its exploit.
Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Professor Isa Pantami made the announcement at the Digital Nigeria Conference and dubbed it “Digital Nigeria Day”. The day coincided with the United Nation’s Information Development Day.
The Minister also spoke of the National Identity program, which has grown by 25 million in just two years. He said over 90 million Nigerians are now captured under the program. Prior to now, the country spent 13 years recording 39 million Nigerians in the digital ID program.
Professor Pantami was in Dubai earlier at the GITEX 2020 event where two Nigerian startups Shapshap and FLOEWS participated in the Supernova Challenge Pitch Competition with Shapshap winning the challenge under the Mobility and Smart Cities Innovator category.
The President recently signed the Startup Bill into law, a bill that seeks to transform the Nigerian startup environment by helping to boost investors’ confidence in the Nigerian startup ecosystem because of government backing.
The Project Manager, Victor Famubode, for the Startup Bill spoke with CryptoTvplus on monday, saying it is expedient that the policy and innovation catch up with each other, especially with the one in the crypto industry.
In 2019, the Buhari administration changed the name of the Ministry of Communications to the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy with the view of further expanding the mandate of the ministry to capture the goals of digitalization of the Nigerian economy in line with one of the key agenda of the administration which was Economic Growth and Recovery Plan (EGRP).
