Sky Mavis is cutting 21% of staff to enhance Ronin Wallet, develop Mavis Marketplace, launch a new game, expand Web3 publishing, and grow the Ronin Network.

Sky Mavis, the creator of the popular blockchain-based game Axie Infinity and operator of the Ronin blockchain, has announced a 21% reduction in its workforce. The move is part of what the company describes as a realignment to sharpen its focus on key projects and long-term goals.

Trung Nguyen, co-founder and CEO of Sky Mavis, shared the news in a post on X, explaining that the layoffs were not a reflection of financial troubles or employee performance but a decision to refocus resources.

It is a shift in priorities aimed at aligning our resources with our long-term vision,” Nguyen wrote. He stressed that the affected employees would receive support, including severance packages and assistance in finding new roles.

We are deeply grateful for the dedication and impact of those affected, and we are committed to supporting them through this transition with robust severance packages and resources to help them find new opportunities.”

Nguyen clarified that the layoffs were not linked to financial instability but were intended to prepare the company for significant growth in the coming years. “This decision is not related to the company’s budget or financial health,” he said. It is a strategic move that allows for a sharper focus and positioning Sky Mavis for hypergrowth in 2025 and beyond.”

Plans for a New Axie Infinity Game and Expanded Projects

As part of its revised strategy, Sky Mavis plans to use the freed-up resources to advance several projects, including a new game in the Axie Infinity universe. While Nguyen did not reveal details about the upcoming game, he highlighted it as a priority for the company.

Other areas of focus include improving the Ronin Wallet, enhancing the Mavis Marketplace, and expanding the Ronin blockchain ecosystem. The company also aims to strengthen its efforts in Web3 game publishing, signaling an intent to remain a leader in blockchain-based gaming.

The restructuring, Nguyen noted, is meant to make Sky Mavis more agile and better equipped to deliver impactful products.

Commitment to Affected Employees

Nguyen expressed gratitude for the contributions of the departing employees, emphasizing that the decision was not a reflection of their work. The decision to part ways with talented team members was not made lightly and does not reflect their contributions to Sky Mavis,” he said.

He acknowledged the emotional toll of the layoffs but reaffirmed the company’s commitment to its mission of bringing economic freedom to everyone, starting with gamers.” For the remaining staff, Nguyen said expectations would be higher, but the company would ensure their efforts are well-rewarded.
