Do better, train AI to be better than humans – Snowden advises

The development of AI has spanned decades, but the introduction of ChatGPT is one of the recent advancements that have demonstrated the rich capabilities of AI. Using ChatGPT for instance, has shown that AI can truly be more efficient than humans in some aspects of life, and this is one of the reasons why Edward Snowden say that artificial intelligence should be trained to be better than humans.

ChatGPT, a project by OpenAI, is a language model created based on the GPT-3.5 architecture. It was designed to engage in natural language conversations with humans and provide assistance in various tasks such as answering questions, generating text, translating languages, and more.

OpenAI is an artificial intelligence research organization founded in 2015 by tech luminaries to develop advanced AI technologies safely and beneficially. It has made significant contributions to the field of AI and works to promote transparency and ethical considerations.

As a virtual guest at the Consensus 2023, the former employee of the NSA and whistleblower said that while the current trends in the development of AI involve training it to think like humans, it will be unfruitful and limiting to the potential of AI if it does not have a higher performance than humans.

“As with children, we don’t need machines to be like us,” he said. “We need them to be better than us, and if they aren’t better than us, we did a terrible job.”

Training AI models

The computer scientist went on to say that today’s training models for AI are not efficient and should be changed. He highlighted how information from social media platforms such as Reddit is being used to feed AI tools, which are bad. “It’s like the internet equivalent of YouTube comments, but you want to create something decent, good, creative, and useful.”

Snowden added that while a project like ChatGPT is an open-source platform, there are concerns about recent adjustments to make it less open. Some of these, he said, are inspired by governments that want to control how these tools are used. He revealed that these companies are “being rewarded” by governments  “for antisocial behavior” and should not be allowed.

To solve problems of this magnitude, Snowden said that people must fight for open AI systems. “People are going to be raising the red flag of ‘software communism,’ where we need to declare the models must be open,” Snowden said.
