Thai Citizens Promised Airdrop Ahead of Elections

As Thailand gets ready for its upcoming general election, a number of political parties in the country have been making bold claims and promises to their supporters.

Srettha Thavisin, a candidate contesting for the post of Prime Minister through the Pheu Thai Party, has promised each citizen 10,000 baht in digital currency as payouts following the general election scheduled for May.

As part of its suggested economic stimulus measures, the Pheu Thai Party promised to give out 10,000 baht to everybody who is 16 years old or older. According to Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Pheu Thai’s main adviser on public involvement and innovation, the project is an effort to distribute products created in Thailand using blockchain technology.

However, this has raised some concerns. It has been argued that such a program would necessitate a large investment in regulatory and technological infrastructure and that it would be vulnerable to fraud, abuse, and money laundering.

It is important to note that in 2021, the Bank of Thailand declared Thai Stablecoins as illegal.

Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn, who serves as the Minister of Digital Economy and Society in addition to his role as the Deputy Leader of the Palang Pracharat Party, has stated that he requires additional time to research the Pheu Thai policies before offering his opinion on it. 

It is not possible to predict exactly how people will respond to this proposition, nor say for certain if it would garner sufficient support to be enacted into law should the opposing party emerge victorious.
