MicroStrategy’s Saylor can receive Bitcoin via email

Michael Saylor, the chairman of Microstrategy has converted his corporate email address into a Bitcoin Lightning address. Using the email address saylor@microstrategy.com, Saylor can now receive BTC sent from anyone.

The integration was done by his business analytics software firm, MicroStrategy, using The Lightning Address protocol, which allows developers to use an Internet identifier in place of a standard Lightning invoice, or payment request. The internet identifier could be an email address.

The Microstrategy Executive Chairman, Saylor in January unveiled in an online forum plans to launch services using the Bitcoin Lightning Network in 2023. “Microstrategy is developing and exploring digital solutions that will be built on the Lighting Network. These solutions will enhance enterprise marketing and cybersecurity for institutional clients,” he said.

The Lightning Network was proposed by developers Thaddeus Dryja and Joseph Poon in 2016 intended to enable faster and cheaper transactions while not having to change the block size. The Lightning Network builds a second layer on top of the Bitcoin blockchain that uses user-generated, micropayment channels to conduct transactions more efficiently.

Particularly, Lightning Network is Bitcoin’s layer 2 scaling solution that was designed to make Bitcoin payments cheaper and faster.

Saylor is also known to be an outspoken Bitcoin proponent and was reportedly worth around $1.2 billion. His company holds a large chunk of Bitcoin approximately 140,000 BTC equivalent to $4 billion at current prices. After disclosing the integration, the founder has been receiving donations in BTC from fans.
