Nokia, once a manufacturer of consumer mobile devices, is now tapping into the Metaverse to enhance remote work experiences for workers in various industries. In its pursuit to aid remotely-located workers, the telecoms infrastructure firm has set up two labs to explore the Metaverse technologies.
Nokia has been using the Metaverse in several innovative ways, from brewing beer in a 5G-connected microbrewery in collaboration with the University of Technology, Sydney and Dortmund University, to assisting Cessna aircraft technicians at remote airports through augmented reality. The collaboration between the two universities allowed for joint experiments in brewing beer, where they adjusted the process, temperature, timing, volumes, and recipes, and fed all the data back into digital twins. This digital twin allowed them to simulate the brewing process and perfect the beer in the digital space.
Nokia’s Global Chief Strategy and Technology Officer, Nishant Batra, believes that the Metaverse will have a profound impact on industries, as seen in ports tracking containers with digital twins and aerospace companies building aircraft parts in the digital world. However, the consumer metaverse is not expected to take off until 2030, according to Robert Joyce, CTO of Nokia Oceania. He predicts that by next year, there will be five times more revenue spent on the industrial metaverse than the consumer or enterprise metaverse.
When it comes to the role of blockchain in the Metaverse, Joyce is optimistic that it will play a key part in ensuring the integrity of assets and payments within the digital space. He believes that blockchain will maintain uniqueness in the Metaverse, but is not an essential technology for it.
Despite the current clunky nature of consumer metaverse devices, Joyce envisions a future where augmented reality wearables are mass-produced and comfortable to use.
