The social media platform Twitter is set to launch an edit button for the first time. There have been debates for years as to whether adding an edit button to the Twitter app was a marketable feature for a product made for viral content.
The eligibility to access this feature of an edit button will be on a paid subscription of $4.99 for Twitter Blue. The edit feature is named ‘Edit Tweet,’ and it will enable users to modify their tweets. When users publish a tweet, the Edit Tweet option will allow editing on the post for up to 30 minutes after it is published. Edited tweets will have a label, and other Twitter users can click the label to view earlier versions of the published post.
To swiftly detect and resolve potential problems, Twitter is testing the edit option with a selected number of users. In the following weeks, paid subscribers on the platform will have the edit button activated on Twitter Blue.
The debate over an edit button and the impact on user experience has been a long standing one. Some are concerned that it will be misused by those looking to go viral by changing the content of a post after it has been retweeted. Even though users frequently asked for an edit button, the firm never made a firm decision on whether or not to introduce an edit option on the social app. The former CEO of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, stated in January 2020 that it was highly improbable.
A discussion erupted earlier when Elon Musk acquired a significant share in the firm and asked his followers if they supported an edit button. The majority of users who voted chose “yes.” In a blatant attempt to separate the platform from Musk’s influence, Twitter quickly acknowledged that it had already begun testing the functionality from within and highlighted that it was developing an edit button before Musk’s poll and tweet.
Twitter has revealed the edit button is expected to go live in a few weeks.
