President Biden signs an Executive Order to boost AI leadership, while Trump aims for the U.S. to become the world's crypto capital.

While president-elect Donald Trump wants the United States to become the crypto capital of the world, current president Joe Biden intends to ensure the US remains a global leader in artificial intelligence (AI).

With a signed Executive Order, Joe Biden wants the nation to accelerate in the development of advanced AI infrastructure, prioritizing national security, promoting clean energy, and strengthening the economy.

The Executive Order directs the use of federal land owned by the Department of Defense and the Department of Energy for the construction of large-scale AI data centers and clean energy facilities. These sites will be selected based on their access to high-capacity energy transmission infrastructure and minimal impact on local communities and the environment. Private companies will be invited to build and operate these facilities, covering all associated costs.

The initiative also seeks to align AI development with clean energy goals. The order indicates companies building AI infrastructure will be required to use renewable energy sources to power their operations. This step supports the transition to clean energy while ensuring the infrastructure can meet the significant electricity demands of AI technology.

Per the order, federal agencies will allocate resources to streamline approvals and conduct environmental reviews efficiently, ensuring projects can move forward quickly while meeting necessary standards. Additionally, the Department of Energy will collaborate with utilities to connect these AI facilities to the national grid.

The Executive Order emphasizes affordability for American consumers. Developers will bear the full costs of building and operating these facilities, ensuring that electricity prices remain stable. To further protect consumers, Biden said that a comprehensive study will be conducted to assess the impact of AI data centers on energy prices.

This order also aims to support smaller businesses and startups by providing access to some of the newly developed AI infrastructure. The government plans to work closely with allies to promote secure and sustainable AI development worldwide, reinforcing the U.S.’s leadership in both technology and clean energy.

This Executive Order comes at the closing phase of President Biden’s administration, following Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 U.S. presidential election. Opinions are divided on how the United States will adjust its strategies to sustain its position as a leader in global technological advancements.

While AI has been a major focus, technologies such as cryptocurrency and blockchain have also gained prominence. The president-elect has emphasized making the U.S. a global leader in advancing the crypto industry and shaping its future.

At the same time, nations like China and regions such as the European Union and the United Kingdom have introduced initiatives to remain at the forefront of AI innovation, ensuring they stay competitive in this rapidly evolving field.
