US Department of Agriculture (USDA) greenlights blockchain certification

The USDA has approved a blockchain-based system for issuing certifications, incorporating CattleProof's cow NFTs into its records.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has recognized CattleProof’s “Verified” as its first blockchain-based Process Verified Program.

CattleProof, operating out of Wyoming, uses a decentralized digital ledger to track and document individual cow information.

The technology employs electronic identification tags to gather data from each animal and combines it with details about their condition, location, and other features, saving everything on a tamper-proof blockchain.

According to the company post, CattleProof stands as the first U.S. business that the USDA approved as a Process Verified Program for integrating cows into the blockchain.

When a company like CattleProof needs to break new regulatory ground to sell its products, the USDA’s PVP service provides the necessary framework.

This PVP system enabled CattleProof, as the first company to create a decentralized network for monitoring cattle conditions in pursuit of regulatory support, to establish and present a set of voluntary standards for government review.

CattleProof claims it uniquely provides Born in the USA certification for cattle, along with digital certificates featuring hyperlinks to individual animal information, and the “only USDA PVP integrated with Heartland Payments to buy and sell USDA verified cattle directly.”

CattleProof’s successful application approval shows that the company has proven its compliance with existing regulatory standards within the sector and has implemented measures to ensure ongoing compliance as blockchain technology becomes more integrated with agriculture.

The USDA increasingly recognizes blockchain as a core technology within the agricultural industry. As reported, the department has proposed amendments to its regulations regarding organic products to enable the use of blockchain technology in tracing supply chains.

The U.S. Agriculture Department’s approval of the blockchain-based certification system marks a significant advancement in agricultural transparency.

This technology could benefit African farmers by ensuring the authenticity of their products, enabling them to access global markets more effectively. With enhanced traceability, farmers can secure fair pricing for their goods, reduce the risk of fraud, and improve their profit margins.

Additionally, blockchain streamlines supply chains, making it easier for farmers to connect with buyers and access essential resources.

Overall, this system promotes sustainable practices and economic growth, empowering African farmers to thrive in a competitive marketplace.
