WalletConnect, the popular wallet bridge protocol, has detailed expectations and plans going forward. The protocol reiterated it is on a journey to creating an open-source and decentralized network where “anybody, anywhere can self-host.”
It is currently in the first phase of its plans where it is pioneering the WalletConnect Network, as it transitioned from a protocol to a network.
Moving forward, WalletConnect has two main focuses for 2024 which are in two phases, and scheduled for Q1 and Q3. In Q1 2024, WalletConnect plans to launch the closed, permissioned WalletConnect Network following a permissioned registry approach. The database will also be open to multiple parties to read and write it.
The open, permissioned WalletConnect Network in Q3 2024 will receive third-party support to run a relay. According to the team, they will “federate the WalletConnect Network” in this phase. Running a relay with selected third parties will enable the team to gradually open up the initiative for shared ownership.
WalletConnect hinted that this stage will include testing the incentive layer to ensure the viability of participant rewards.
In 2025, WalletConnect said the federation of the project it plans to work on from the previous quarter will become a fully permissionless network. This network will be operated by infrastructure providers, additionally, the network will operate autonomously.
“WalletConnect Network will operate independently from any single entity control — including ourselves,” the team said.
