Metamask introduces a new security alert feature

The self-custodial crypto wallet firm has partnered with the web3 security company Blockaid to beef up security. Via the partnership, Metamask aims to introduce a new security feature that sends security alerts.

Following the announcement, MetaMask desktop users can now enable the new feature by navigating the setting page. To activate, users are to opt in under the MetaMask experimental setting and add the Privacy Preserving Offline Module (PPOM).

PPOM however is an offline security engine. “It can simulate and validate transactions and signatures before signing them, using only node RPC communication requests to a configured node provider—no other data is sent to an external server,” Senior product owner at MetaMask Bárbara Schorchit, explained.

Schorchit added that Blockaid’s dApp scanning solution is potent to take any dApp and simulate all possible user interactions. Also, the product owner said it can also validate whether those user interactions are malicious. This however will help determine if the whole dApp is malicious or not.

This feature works by issuing alerts if a transaction appears or is suspected to be malicious.

Furthermore, mobile users will have access to the new feature on their Metamask mobile app at a later date in November. Schorchit disclosed that the feature will later be integrated into the app as a default feature, making it accessible to all users.

The Co-founder and CEO of Blockaid on the development said it is exciting to be working with MetaMask to lead “the charge in defining how a wallet should defend its users.”  Ido Ben-Natan, the CEO also established that “for the ecosystem to be ready for billions of users, it needs to be safer.”

Additionally, Schorchit mentioned, “MetaMask and Blockaid anticipate that the new privacy-preserving security alerts will prevent the loss of assets worth at least billions of dollars when the feature becomes a default setting for MetaMask wallets.”
