English computer scientist and inventor of the World Wide Web (WWW) Sir Tim Berners-Lee is set to auction the original code as a Non-Fungible Token.
Auction will take place at Sotheby and will be the first time Benners-Lee will be able to raise money directly from one of his greatest inventions in the modern era with the proceeds benefiting initiatives that he and his wife support, FT writes.
Speaking on the auction, Berners-Lee said the it was an “opportunity to look back . . . 30 years on from the initial code, which was very, very simple, to the state [of the web] now, which has some wonderfully simple aspects to it but also has a lot of issues of various sorts”.
NFT has been seeing growing interest in the recent months with celebrities, entrepreneurs and artists using the innovation to sell unique moments, arts and creatives. The explosion in NFT has also brought exposure of cryptocurrency to the audience of NFT creators globally.
Speaking on NFT, Berners-Lee said “The idea is somebody might like a digitally signed version of the code, a bit like plenty of people have asked for physically autographed copies of the book,”
Cassandra Hatton, global head of science and popular culture at Sotheby’s” commenting on NFT said, “The fantastic thing about NFTs is we can create this digital provenance document, proving the authenticity coming from the creator,” “This will become the reference point for all others. It really is the most appropriate, quintessential digitally-born artefact” for an NFT auction.
