ConsenSys is taking steps to make its Layer-2 network, Linea, more community-driven. The company recently announced the creation of the Linea Association, a nonprofit organization based in Switzerland, which will oversee the Linea network and help it become more decentralized.
The main goal of the Linea Association is to ensure that control of the Linea network gradually moves from ConsenSys to the broader community. This nonprofit group will manage important assets for the network, handle funding for ongoing projects, and set up a governance system where the community can vote on changes.
One of the big changes expected next year is the launch of the LINEA token, which will let holders participate in key decisions about the network’s future. By using the LINEA token, members of the Linea community will have a direct say in how the platform grows and operates.
Linea was originally built by ConsenSys to improve Ethereum’s speed and lower transaction costs. Since its launch on Ethereum in August 2023, Linea has aimed to help decentralized applications scale while maintaining security.
The association plans to support more developers and encourage projects to join the ecosystem, making it a more active and collaborative space for blockchain applications.
According to ConsenSys, creating this nonprofit is an essential step toward a more open and community-led future for Linea. The new association is expected to help Linea grow into a fully decentralized network, supporting the Ethereum community with new governance and funding models.
Nicolas Liochon, the founder of Linea and a board member of the Linea Association, stated that decentralization is central to Linea’s mission, emphasizing that Linea should be owned and governed by its community as a shared resource, much like Layer 1 Ethereum.

The creation of the Linea Association is meant to keep the protocol’s future in the hands of its users, allowing both users and developers to guide its direction in an open and collaborative way.
This association will bring together a community of Ethereum experts, developers, and users who are focused on helping more people live in a blockchain-based digital world.
Joseph Lubin, the CEO of Consensys, stated that as the company moves further toward decentralization, Linea plays a key role in building a Network State for the new, decentralized global economy—one of many such networks they plan to join.
He added that by decentralizing important aspects like governance, infrastructure, and community support, they aim to create a stronger and more transparent Web3.
With projects like Linea, Consensys is setting up the groundwork for an open, collaborative, and censorship-resistant world where people and communities around the world can engage fully and securely.
