Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, expressed his appreciation for memecoins that dedicate a portion of their supply to charitable causes. He highlighted how a particular memecoin, “ebull,” has recently donated to various charities.
Vitalik explained that when he receives memecoins, he donates them to charity. For example, he was given 10 billion coins from “moodeng” and used them to support technology aimed at preventing airborne diseases.
However, he prefers that people donate directly to charities instead of sending him the coins. He suggested that memecoin communities could form DAOs (Decentralized Autonomous Organizations) to allow members to collectively decide which charities to support and how to manage donations.
Vitalik has previously shared his view that the most valuable role for memecoins is to create a “positive-sum” effect, meaning that everyone benefits, especially the world at large. He feels it’s encouraging to see moments when memecoins are used in ways that contribute to the greater good.
Donations to charity and technology causes
Vitalik Buterin has made substantial donations, primarily through cryptocurrency, to various charities and blockchain projects. One of his most notable contributions came in 2021, when he donated over $1 billion in Shiba Inu tokens to support India’s COVID-19 relief efforts.
Although market fluctuations affected the full value, it was still among the largest crypto donations ever made.
He also donated approximately $336 million in Dogelon Mars tokens to the Methuselah Foundation, which focuses on medical research to extend human lifespan.
Additionally, Buterin has supported organizations like GiveDirectly, which provides direct cash aid to people in poverty. For instance, he contributed $100 million in cryptocurrency to assist with poverty relief in Africa through his “CryptoRelief” initiative.

Beyond these charitable efforts, Vitalik is also a strong advocate for blockchain development. He has provided funding for open-source software projects, such as those on Gitcoin, which bolster the Ethereum ecosystem. He also supports scientific research, including anti-aging and AI safety initiatives.
In total, his donations have surpassed $1.5 billion, reflecting his commitment to both humanitarian causes and the advancement of blockchain technology.
