James Howells dreams of experiencing this joy. A British former IT engineer, Howells mined cryptocurrency in 2013, back when Bitcoin prices were very low. Unfortunately, he accidentally discarded the hard drive containing his access key.
Since then, he’s been on a quest to dig through landfill trash to retrieve it. However, local officials have been reluctant to grant him permission citing safety and environmental concerns.
Now, Howells has launched a lawsuit against the Newport City Council for $647 million after a costly mistake led to the loss of 7,500 Bitcoins in a local landfill.
Howells’ Bitcoins, virtually worthless when he discarded the hard drive, are now valued at around $510 million. The value has fluctuated due to Bitcoin’s volatility, but even by a conservative estimate, his lost cryptocurrency represents a massive fortune.
In 2013, while cleaning out his office, Howells unknowingly disposed of the hard drive containing the digital wallet for his 7,500 Bitcoins. When he realized his mistake, the drive had already been sent to a landfill.
Since then, Howells has repeatedly requested the Newport City Council to allow him to excavate the landfill to retrieve his lost hard drive.
At the time of the incident, Bitcoin had not yet reached the immense value it holds today, but as the years passed, the value skyrocketed. Today, each Bitcoin is worth over sixty thousand dollars, making Howells’ lost trove worth a significant fortune.
Despite multiple requests, Newport City Council has denied Howells permission to dig in the landfill, citing concerns over environmental impact, safety risks, and the uncertainty of recovering the hard drive.
The council argues that the excavation would be an enormous, costly undertaking, and there is no guarantee the hard drive would be found or in working condition after years buried in the waste.
In a recent statement, the council explained that the costs of excavating the landfill, managing the potential environmental risks, and the uncertainty of recovering data from the hard drive make the project unfeasible.
Howells, however, remains undeterred. He has assembled a team of experts, including environmental engineers, data recovery specialists, and even artificial intelligence researchers, to propose a safe and thorough excavation. The plan would involve high-tech equipment, including robotic dogs equipped with AI to sift through the landfill debris.

In light of the council’s continued refusal, Howells has filed a lawsuit seeking $647 million in damages, arguing that the council’s decision has caused him significant financial loss.
Howells stated that he has offered several solutions to excavate the site safely, and he believes the council’s refusal is unjustified. He feels they are denying him access to something that rightfully belongs to him, emphasizing that it’s not only about the money but also about recovering what was lost.
Legal and cryptocurrency experts have weighed in on the case, suggesting that Howells faces an uphill battle. While the loss of Bitcoin is undoubtedly significant, proving that the council’s decision directly caused him to lose access to his assets may be challenging.
Howells is optimistic that his plan will work if he is given the opportunity. His lawsuit is still in its early stages, but if successful, it could set a precedent for future cases involving lost digital assets.
