ENS introduces Gasless DNS Security Extensions

Published

on

The Ethereum Name Service (ENS) has unveiled Gasless DNSSEC, bringing a new level of accessibility to users. Now, you can effortlessly import DNS TLDs like .com and .xyz without incurring any fees.

The Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is a distributed, open, and expandable naming system that interacts with the Ethereum blockchain. It serves a similar purpose to the Domain Name System (DNS), which maps human-readable names to machine-readable addresses, but it is specifically designed for the Ethereum blockchain.

ENS (Ethereum Name Service) enables users to purchase and manage their own domains, simplifying secure and decentralized transactions.

With ENS, there’s no need to deal with lengthy and intricate addresses. Key features of ENS include human-readable names, which map user-friendly names like “john.eth” to machine-readable addresses.

It is decentralized in nature and can be expanded to incorporate new features and functionalities over time. Additionally, ENS offers domain ownership and other benefits.

ENS works by using a system of hierarchical names called domains, similar to the DNS system. Users can purchase ENS tokens at various exchanges, both centralized and decentralized, to participate in the ENS ecosystem.

ENS has consistently enhanced the existing internet infrastructure, such as DNS. However, importing DNS names has always incurred significant network fees.

Fortunately, with the introduction of Gasless Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC), this functionality can now be achieved without any cost, eliminating the need for gas fees or on-chain transactions.

This remarkable advancement is made possible by CCIP Read (EIP-3668), an application-level standard developed by @nicksdjohnson for EVM smart contracts to fetch and verify off-chain data.

Gasless DNSSEC, implemented in EP5.1, has been approved by @ENS_DAO to activate a new smart contract at the DNS TLD level, ensuring seamless verification of DNS records on-demand through an off-chain gateway.

Consequently, the usage of DNS domains in ENS becomes free. Users also have the option to continue importing names on-chain if they prefer, while existing imported DNS names will continue to function smoothly.
