YouTube has proactively addressed potential challenges arising from AI-generated content on its platform. The popular video-sharing platform is now enforcing a requirement for creators to openly disclose if their videos incorporate AI-generated elements. This initiative is part of YouTube’s broader strategy to enhance transparency and user protection.
From now on, Creators must disclose the use of AI in their video creation process. This disclosure will involve marking videos as “synthetic” to inform viewers about the presence of AI-generated or synthetic content.
YouTube also said that it will introduce a labeling system that distinguishes videos with AI-generated elements. This system is crucial, especially for videos covering sensitive topics like elections or ongoing conflicts.
Generative AI
Generative AI refers to a type of artificial intelligence technology that can produce various types of content, including text, imagery, audio, and synthetic data, using generative models. Generative AI models learn from existing data sets to create new and original content autonomously.
Recent advancements in generative AI have resulted in the development of learning generative models of complex data like images. Generative AI is used in various applications, including chatbots, programming tools, text-to-image products, and text-to-video products.
However, generative AI poses several challenges, including accuracy and reliability, lack of creativity and originality, understanding context, quality concerns, and ethical considerations.
Implementation of the new code of conduct
According to YouTube, the disclosure and labeling requirements are set to be implemented in the coming months, reflecting YouTube’s commitment to staying ahead of potential challenges associated with AI-generated content.
The main objective of mandating creators to label videos as “synthetic” is to provide transparency to viewers. This disclosure serves as a warning to users that the video content includes AI-generated elements.
Additionally, the video streaming platform also outlined penalties for creators who inaccurately label or fail to disclose AI-generated content. Possible consequences include video takedowns and demonetization.
It said that this is part of its commitment to responsible AI innovation. In August 2023, YouTube unveiled principles for collaborating with the music industry on artificial intelligence (AI), with a focus on responsible AI use.
Its CEO, Neal Mohan revealed that the principles are important as AI plays a growing role in music, providing innovative solutions for composition, production, and musical experiences. The platform acknowledges the dual nature of AI, capable of positive contributions and potential risks, especially when misused.
