“We hope to be remembered as the most successful wallet drainer ever,” said Inferno Drainer.
Inferno Drainer, a popular service for creating phishing scams, has announced it is shutting down after its kit was used to steal nearly $70 million worth of cryptocurrency this year.
In a Telegram post on November 26, the team behind Inferno Drainer announced it was time to move on and would no longer operate the wallet drainer, but would allow the files and infrastructure to remain active for users to migrate to other services.
“It has been a long journey with all of you, and we’d like to express our heartfelt gratitude. However, nothing lasts forever,” the team wrote.
It further added, appreciating its team members for their commitment to the company, saying “We hope you can remember us as the best drainer that has ever existed and that we succeeded in helping you in the quest of making money.”
Inferno Drainer became popular in early 2023, particularly after the shutdown of Monkey Drainer, a similar tool. It worked by taking a 20% cut of the stolen funds from crypto wallets drained by its users.
Since February, Inferno Drainer has reportedly stolen over $70 million from over 100,000 victims, according to analytics from the Web3 anti-scam platform Scam Sniffer. However, the Inferno Drainer team claims the amount stolen is over $80 million.
Inferno Drainer has deleted the Telegram account “mr_inferno_drainer” used to promote its services and warned users against trusting any other drainers who may use the same name in the future.
According to Blockchain security firm CertiK, Inferno Drainer was one of the most damaging phishing kits to the crypto community.
Although Inferno Drainer has shut down, rival phishing kits such as Pink Drainer and Angel Drainer are still active. Angel Drainer even released an update on Nov. 25, allowing its users to drain wallets on more blockchains.
Monkey Drainer, a crypto drainer that stole millions, closed down in March, saying it was time to pursue other opportunities.
