Talent migration to drive adoption of crypto games in 2023: CMC Report

Published

on

Gaming is an integral part of the Web3 ethos as a report from 2022 shows that crypto games accounted for 49% of all dapp activity, “with on average 1.15 million daily unique active wallets, and 7.4 billion in transactions count”.

One of the main attributes that makes most Web3 games attractive is the ownership and earning model built into the design. Players don’t only play and have fun, but own game assets in the form of NFTs and earn as they play.

While these attributes has played crucial roles in driving adoption of Web3 games, going into 2023, there are several elements that are projected to make Web3 games even more visible.

According to a report by CMC, one of these elements is a mass migration of Web2 game developers into Web3. This will happen to aid the transition of the useful features of Web2 games into Web3 “resulting in games that are more fun and built on the back of traditional gaming best practices”.

Free to Own, Play to Earn, Play and Earn and Play and Own

CMC explained that apart from Play and Earn or Play to Earn games, there will be more Free to Own and Play and Own games to expand the architecture of crypto games.

F2O in particular is important as it will help to lower the barrier for gamers to enter the industry. NFTs will be offered for free and not the usual buy-before-play pattern where NFTs are bought at exorbitant rates in most play to earn games.

CMC added that in addition to the above factors, driving adoption for crypto games, there will be “on-chain gaming, F2P blockchain gaming, evolving tokenomics models, genre and audience expansion across web3 games, the Asian blockchain gaming scene, user-generated content (UGC) and artificial intelligence (AI) in blockchain games”.

Infrastructure: wallets for players

Another aspect of the crypto gaming infrastructure that will be useful for 2023 is the advancement in wallets that gamers use, CMC noted. At the moment, while it’s not easy to manage private keys, a wallet like metamask seems not to be the perfect fit for gamers  because it is not mobile browser friendly.

Based on the CMC report, the Sequence wallet by Horizon and Stardust is projected to be a better fit for gamers in 2023. Sequence is a non-custodial multichain wallet that allows users to store several keys, and pay for transactions easily using several crypto assets. It is currently used in Skyweaver, a mobile game developed by Horizon.
